Shirley Caesar''s prominence in gospel music''s history should be unquestioned by now. This grand dame of the genre has kept her artistic integrity intact throughout a solo career over three decades long. A critique of Caesar''s 35th album, You Can Make It, won''t diminish her importance to the genre in which she has been a major player for so long. This album finds her in strong voice, exerting her hard-earned diva power with the gentleness of a friendly big sister and with the authority of her pastoral status.

Caesar''s co-production with Bubba Smith and Michael E. Mathis gives this studio outing the airiness of a live date, too. Real brass, not synthesizer imitations, and a large band that never upstages Caesar buoys the percolating praise of "Rejoice" and the more grandiose "I Am God." Something, however, is amiss from You Can Make It. Caesar gives a peppy interpretation of Jesus telling one man he must be born again on "Nicodemus," but one of her longer, engaging story songs would have better hit the spot.

Still, Caesar''s gift for a booming anthem like "Reign Jesus Reign" can forgive smaller artistic misgivings.
