In searching for a wood burning kit, I was looking for something not too expensive (hoping it would survive at least these two projects), had a variety of tips, and decent reviews. The temperature control seemed like a nice feature as well.Pros:- It has everything I was looking for in an introductory kit.- The heat shielding works well.- It seems to heat up quickly (although I have nothing to compare it to other than soldering irons, which seem like very similar concepts).- The plastic case is sturdy enough and works well.Cons:- As others have pointed out, the temperature control is in an awkward spot. I''ve taken to draping the cord over my shoulder, which keeps the temp control out of the way for the most part.- Some of the tips get a little soft at high temperatures (not sure if this common).My advice:- Take care when screwing in /unscrewing the tips. Letting the tool cool before changing tips is a good idea as well. Hot tips are probably much more likely to break.- Clean tips transfer heat much better. I use very light pressure on fine sandpaper to clean off corrosion.To sum it up, I think this kit has been a good introduction to wood burning. I like the way it works, it gets very hot. But you have to be careful that the temperature gauge doesn''t move as my arm would lay on it and it would move the gauge. When I received the item, I was impressed by the sheer quantity of things that came all in a neat little case. I ordered various wooden items all excited to get working on. I plugged the thing in and when I went to adjust the temperature, I couldn’t tell what was high or low because there’s no indicator line. So I had to guess based on some test burns. Next, I wanted to try out each and EVERY single tip so I could acquaint myself with their effect at various temperatures. Sadly, most of the tips turned a strange color after use. Most of them took so long to actually burn the wood that I was unable to make anything with organic shapes. Only lines and dots that took forever to make. After only 30 minutes, I had to put it down and shut it off because the handle got too hot! The stand for storing the thing is a joke. I taped it to a ceramic plate to ensure it wasn’t accidentally knocked off the table, because who wants to burn their carpet or set the house on fire? All in all, I would have returned this thing, but I waited too long while leaving it in my garage to decontaminate during this whole crazy pandemic. I have worked with wood burning tools in the past, but this was no where near what I expected. I wouldn’t give this to a kid or gift it to anyone. It’s a house fire or personal injury guaranteed. I don’t know where all the positive reviews are coming from, unless I just got a lemon. But I don’t think it was. It was just pure junk. I became very disappointed as I worked with this tool because the tip/tips loosened soooo much (from the heat of the tool?) that I could not finish my 10 ornaments for my grandchildren! The first 3 ornaments went well, but as I continued working/burning I noticed the tip was "bending" out of the shaft where it screws in...
The longer I worked with the tool the looser and looser the tip became... The tip even fell out of the holder shaft and burned a hole in my table cloth before I could get my pliers to pick up the extremely hot tip!!
I decided to turn it off and let it cool down so I could continue a little later... when I cam back to use it 30 min. Later, the shaft that holds the tips was DEFORMED and unable to hold ANY OF THE TIPS!! ALLLL the tips were too loose and would not even begin to screw into the shaft... Soooo, alllll those extra tips CAN NOT BE USED... The shaft WILL NOT HOLD ANY OF THE TIPS...

The first time I used the pen I noticed the tip I was using (didn''t matter which one) would end up coming loose after about 5-10 minutes of burning. Everything I read or watched online told you to NOT use plyers or anything on the tip while it was hot because it could bend or damage it, so I would have to unplug it, wait for it to cool down, then tighten it up. This occurred every time I used the pen no matter how much I tightened the tip before heating.

Then after about 3 or 4 uses, the threading you screw the tip into became warped and bent so now none of the tips screw in correctly. Finally, my saving grace was a video someone posted here in the reviews showing them changing the tip. Now I was ready to start several projects but keep running into a big time annoyance! The threading on the parts that come off are very cheap and loose! The tip, no matter how much I tighten it, comes loose constantly when I am working and I have to retighten it with pliers. Sometimes I have to wait for the tool to cool down completely in order to do it. Not cool, huge flaw. You get what you pay for with this $30 burner.
