A few split while drilling holes which has never happened with the other brand, some cracked right in half and those painted ones. They cracked AFTER I had painted them and they were drying!!!!!!!!!! See more When I first received my order I brought them inside and opened them up and put them on my desk. Within an hour or two half of them had cracked. I used what was left and some of them split too. It was cold outside, there was snow on the ground, and maybe the temperature change had caused the problem. I ordered a second batch, and when they arrived I brought them inside and left them in their package for several hours to acclimate before I unwrapped them. Once unwrapped I immediately put them in a zip-lock bag. I figured that they probably needed to be sealed to prevent future problems. I tried coating them with boiled linseed oil, but that made them a little bit darker, which I did not want. So I decided to use Mod Podge. I first coated the bark to stabilize it as it can be a little flaky and come off - I wanted the bark. Then I covered each side of the disk with the Mod Podge to seal it up. It needs to be sealed anyway because if you try to apply ink to it raw it soaks into the wood and makes a very fuzzy and imprecise line. Once sealed it seems to be impervious to outside influences, and does what I need it to do. Since adopting this regime I have not had a single one split on me. I''m also glad to have a couple left over for a different craft project. I''ve left them untreated, as I want them to weather in and eventually rot a little. The bark is extremely soft, and the outer layer does break off easily, but for my purposes, that''s perfect. I believe that issue will be tree-dependent, so I wouldn''t hesitate to buy again. It could always be trwated with a matt wood varnish to give it extra hold if that''s a problem with any others. The surface of the wood is nice and smooth, and lends itself to easy painting & burning without any prep needing to be done.
