See more By far the longest of the three books contained in this big paperback is "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek," Ms. Dillard''s personal memoir of nature
studying in the well-aged mountains of southwestern Virginia. Everything that crawls, burrows, flies, climbs, or runs commands her careful
attention through all the seasons of the year. Thorough also is her study of climate and weather. "An American Childhood" is both autobiographical
and a dispassionate analysis of all that is good -- very little is bad -- about the culture of middle-class Protestant business folk in 20th century
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But it was not for her. In the shortest book, "The Writing Life," Dillard continues to make clear why she had to flee
from respectable middle-class society. She does not exactly celebrate her eccentricities, but justifies them by the insights she gets into the
larger world she now inhabits. This woman can write, and has her own original way of doing so.

Annie Dillard''s three books are bound together by the narrative of her voice. The reader can hear her style. ''Pilgrim at Tinker''s Creek'' is written as if each chapter is an essay about living, observing and getting right into the intricate nature around her. What an incredible world that is.
In ''An American Childhood'' Dillard expresses a child''s thoughts through a writer''s eyes. Some memories are universal and she seems to have had a wonderful young life full of many activities while growing up in Pittsburgh. The adage that a writer is first a reader applies to her.
''The Writer''s Life'' book may be more applicable to writers but it gives the reader a sense of the struggles that writers contend with when they sit down to a blank page. All three books remind me of R. L. Stevenson''s short poem ''Happy Thought'' - ''The world is so full of a number of things, I''m sure we should be all be as happy as kings.''

Such a great book to read in a time of global warming in order to appreciate what we are losing because we are not paying enough attention to nurturing Mother Earth.
