Jo Taylor3.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Not for beginners Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2021 I thought this book would help me with my sampler quilt I have been working on, definitely thought that it would save all the working out of reducing and increasing sizes of blocks but I am a little confused as too how the ladies managed to get the measurements of the cuts...See moreI thought this book would help me with my sampler quilt I have been working on, definitely thought that it would save all the working out of reducing and increasing sizes of blocks but I am a little confused as too how the ladies managed to get the measurements of the cuts to complete a block for your chosen size because no matter what I do all my blocks are not finishing near the size of the chart I am following, for instance I have now found out that if I want a finished block of 10 inches I need to follow the cutting list for a 12 inch block then trim to 10" which ruins the effect of some of the blocks and missing points really annoys me so I am discarding most of what I have sewn so far. I think I will go back to pen and paper to work out my own sizes. Also I do not think this book is really suitable for beginners of quilting, unless you just want to learn some of the different names of blocks, this book is not a step by step block sewing book you will need to work out all your HST seam allowances and order of building etc because if you just follow the diagram of the block pieces you will end up with a very bulky block because no seams will lay flat and you will have multiple over sewing plus all your sizes will be wrong regarding matching up seams, unless you can work out your HST etc plus don''t forget to add your seam allowance to the chart that is provided for the block you are sewing. I think if you can look at a finished block and in your mind work out how it is put together then this book will help you get ideas for different blocks but if you look at a block and have no idea how the block is put together then this book is not for you. I would start with the Missouri quilters block books because for beginners they are very helpful and full of useful information, I always recommend the Missouri star books to friends and family who want to have a go at making a first quilt.
