Description

From Booklist

While true Dillard aficionados will have read her nine books, including the unexpected novel, The Living, others may just have read, and treasured, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, or may always have wondered what Dillard is all about. This selection of writings, chosen by Dillard herself, provides a perfect sampling of her incisive, versatile, and impeccable achievements. Dillard chose to include a generous number of chapters from Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and An American Childhood, the contemplative Holy the Firm in its entirety, and a group of essays from Teaching a Stone to Talk. Her 1992 novel was based on a short story, "The Living," published in 1978. Now it''s published here in yet a third incarnation, as a new and "changed" short story. Donna Seaman

Product Description

A collection of passages selected by the author includes excerpts from the Pulitzer-prize winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, poetry from Holy the Firm, and recollections from An American Childhood. 35,000 first printing.

From Publishers Weekly

Pulitzer Prize winner Dillard (Piligrim at Tinker Creek), a writer of acute and singular observation, gathers poems, short stories, essays and chapters of novels from her diverse body of work. While most of these selections have been previously published, included is a reworked version of the short story "The Living," first published in 1978 in Harper''s and from which the characters in the novel of the same title were drawn. There''s also a new version of Holy the Firm, Dillard''s meditation on and explanation of her search for God in everyday life. This sort of sampler approach works well for a writer whose prose-fiction and non-fiction-often reads like a journal; it also suits readers who like to browse. Dillard moves easily from the specific and physical to the theoretical and metaphysical, blending thought-provoking generalizations with images and descriptions of visceral sensuality. Sure to appeal to Dillard devotees, this collection serves admirably as an introduction to the uninitiated.

See more I have both the hardback and the Kindle version of this. Dillard will always be my all-time favorite writer. I think she has lived an authentic life and hasn''t sought the limelight, in spite of having won awards for her writing ("Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" won the Pulitzer, to name one). There is something about a writer who lives as authentically as the words she writes that gives me the utmost respect for her. It makes for a seamless experience when reading her works. Whether you read her nonfiction or her fiction ("The Living" and "The Maytrees"), every book is like reading a combination of poetry and prose. No one writes as lyrically as Annie Dillard. Her ideas are formed into words that read as sacrament sometimes. My second-favorite writer is Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen; "Winter Tales," "Out of Africa," etc.), who also has a mastery of language. If you had the canon of both writers, you''d know everything you needed to about life (read Dinesen''s short story "Sorrow Acre" to get an idea of what I mean). I''m envious of anyone who discovers these writers for the first time. He/she will be banqueting on a feast of words. 26 people found this helpful Helpful Report The Annie Dillard ReaderRebus5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase English Lit. See more It has taken me two weeks to read two stories, but I really love the two I''ve read so far. If I had a degree in Eng. Lit. at least I''m sure I would move and absorb with more speed. I''m planning on a year or more to read this great book! I heard a song by Laurie Anderson where she mentions an Annie Dillard story and I bought this book after hearing Dillards name over and over for years. Laurie I know holds many degrees, so it comes as no surprise that this book would be better understood by an academic. Having no college, this book will become a study for me, as many books I''m interested in do. That is fine with me, I''m game! 21 people found this helpful Helpful Report The Annie Dillard ReaderDavid (design matters) Robbins5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase A moment to moment experience Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2014 A friend, whose taste I trust, told me how much he enjoyed Tinker Creek by this writer. See more A friend, whose taste I trust, told me how much he enjoyed Tinker Creek by this writer. Since I had absolutely no idea about Annie Dillard, I thought this collection would make a good introduction. Her writing is hard to explain as it is at one point documentary essay, at another poetic prose of the most brilliant kind. She will take off in the most bizarre and fantastic descriptive flights before returning to the subject in more everyday language. Dillard''s inner thoughts are as much the subject as the thing she is documenting so her lyrical inner flights are the essay as well. The effect, however, is so beautiful. It is in the interweaving of thoughts, subject, description and unusual use of language that make READING her writing the experience. Sometimes leaves me mentally breathless so I have to stop a moment before continuing. What a treasure. 10 people found this helpful Helpful Report The Annie Dillard ReaderFaith A. Colburn3.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase I really love Annie Dillard Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2017 I really love Annie Dillard, but I''d already read so much of the text in other books, that I got distracted. Great book for someone just learning about Dillard. Moving on, a joy to read. Challenging. Not afraid to ask tough questions. I rate Dillard higher than Joan Didion.

I may give it another try when I have more time. Helpful Report The Annie Dillard ReaderJ. She opens the mind up like a visit to a new show at a fine museum. Helpful Report The Annie Dillard ReaderSally Beaudean4.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Essence in words!
