Insect Repellent Treatment for Clothing, Gear, and Tents
About Sawyer
Since 1984, Sawyer Products has offered one of the most technologically advanced solutions for protection against sun, bugs, water, and injuries — everything from first aid kits developed for wilderness to point-of-use water filters that filter contaminated water to levels cleaner than U.S. bottled water.
Permethrin-treated clothing and outdoor gear is your first line of defense against insects.
Effective against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and mites for up to 6 weeks
For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, Sawyer Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent not only repels insects, it actually kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, mites, and more than 55 other kinds of insects on contact. Odorless after drying, Permethrin will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your gear.
Use Permethrin on clothing by itself or with skin-applied repellents to create the ultimate protective, armor-like insect barrier.
Effective against more than 55 kinds of insects — from disease-spreading ticks (Lyme disease) and mosquitoes (West Nile and Zika viruses) to chiggers, spiders, mites, and more
Single application lasts up to 6 weeks or through 6 washings (whichever comes first) of sun exposure
24-ounce trigger spray bottle treats up to 5 complete outfits (12-ounce trigger spray treats up to 2 outfits).
18-ounce aerosol spray treats up to 4 complete outfits (9-ounce aerosol treats 2 outfit).
A complete outfit consists of a shirt, pants, and pair of socks; updated EPA dosage is 4.5 ounces of Permethrin per outfit to be effective
Synthetic version of pyrethrum (naturally derived from chrysanthemum flower), repellent has been treating uniforms for the U.S. and Canadian militaries for almost 30 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Permethrin Work?
Permethrin is applied to clothing and outdoor gear material, bonding to the fabric fibers for up to 6 weeks or through 6 washings (whichever comes first). When a tick, mosquito, or other insect comes into contact with Permethrin, it absorbs a dose that will either repel or kill the insect. Applied to clothing, tents, outdoor furniture, or sleeping bags, Permethrin is very effective at reducing the mosquito population in your camping area and keeping ticks from attaching to you.
Sawyer Permethrin uses the same active ingredient found in hair shampoos for head lice. However, because your skin breaks down Permethrin within fifteen minutes of contact, it's not useful as a personal protection insect repellent when applied to the skin.
Permethrin-treated clothing and fabric should be your first line of defense, and it can be used in conjunction with a topical skin-based repellent such as Sawyer's Picaridin, MAXI DEET, and Ultra 30 products.
What Can I Treat with Permethrin?
In addition to clothing and accessories like hats and waders, Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent is ideal for treating backpacks, tents, camp furniture, hammocks, mosquito netting, luggage, and even bed sheets. Since mosquitoes are better hoppers than flyers, adding more Permethrin-treated landing surfaces around you will improve your protection.
Permethrin is compatible for use even on fragile fabrics such as silk, plus all synthetics and waterproof membrane fabrics (won't affect plastics or finishes). While Permethrin is safe and compatible with almost all fabrics, it has an easier time bonding to soft fabrics like cottons, wools, and synthetic blends.
Permethrin Tips & Tricks
For optimal protection, apply a topical repellent to exposed skin.
Hand wash and air dry to preserve application. Select gentle wash and dry cycles.
Store garments in dark plastic bags between uses to help preserve application.
For luggage, spray inside your bags when you travel to avoid transporting insects back home.
Do not expose cats to wet Permethrin (dried Permethrin-treated fabric has no effect).
How Do I Apply Permethrin Safely?
Sawyer recommends that you treat clothing and gear with Permethrin outdoors in a well-ventilated area. If the treatment is accidentally carried out indoors, no adverse health effects are expected based upon calculations of inhaled dose. However, individuals with breathing problems, such as asthma, may be at greater risk. The odor arising from treating fabric with Permethrin is mostly from the aerosol propellants rather than from the insect repellent itself.
To apply, lightly moisten the fabric of the garment with a slow sweeping motion, keeping the bottle about 6 to 8 inches away and treating each side of the garment for about 30 seconds. Sawyer Permethrin should not be added to a washing machine for treatment — it should be sprayed directly onto clothing and gear.
Can I Use Permethrin on My Dog?
Yes, Sawyer Permethrin can be applied to dogs. It safely bonds with dog's hair and penetrates the skin to help control mosquitoes, fleas, ticks (including ticks that can carry Lyme disease, Powassan, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever), and lice for up to 35 days. To apply, start spraying at the tail, moving the dispenser rapidly to cover entire body (including the legs and underbody).
While spraying, fluff hair so that the spray will penetrate to the skin. Make sure spray wets thoroughly, but do not saturate. Do not spray into eyes and face. Avoid contact with genitalia. Wear rubber gloves or mitts when applying. Do not use on puppies under twelve weeks. Consult a veterinarian before using this product on debilitated, medicated, aged, pregnant or nursing animals.

Description
For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, Sawyer Permethrin repels or kills disease-spreading ticks (Lyme disease), mosquitoes (West Nile and Zika viruses) and more than 55 other kinds of insects. Perfect for camping, backpacking, hunting, travel, backyard BBQs, picnics, and more, Permethrin insect and tick repellent adds an odorless layer of protection to shirts, jackets, pants, socks, shoes, sleeping bags, tents, netting, and other outdoor, camping, hunting, and travel gear. A University of Rhode Island study (2017) found that people wearing Permethrin-treated shoes and socks were 73.6 times less likely to have a tick bite than those wearing untreated footwear. Using it on outdoor gear also helps reduce the mosquito population in your camp and prevents ticks from attaching to you. Permethrin spray bonds to fabric fibers for up to 6 weeks (42 days) of exposure to sun and air or 6 washings. Specially formulated not to stain or damage your clothing, other fabrics, gear, and equipment, it''s odorless after drying and is as effective as 100% DEET. To apply, spray Permethrin directly onto clothing and gear with a slow sweeping motion, keeping the bottle about 6 to 8 inches away, and treating each side of the garment for about 30 seconds. The EPA recommends using 4.5 ounces of Permethrin to spray each outfit (consisting of shirt, pants, and socks). Maximize protection by pairing with Sawyer Picaridin topical repellent for the skin. Since 1984, Sawyer has used technological advancements to create products that keep you outdoors — from the backcountry to the backyard — including insect repellents for both skin and clothing, water filters for camping and emergencies, and sun protection.

So I bought this for use at our cabin because of ticks but it never made it there. We have an in ground pool and our two year got over a dozen mosquitoe bites in an hour. I figure this stuff said it would work but i didnt have high hopes. I was seriously wrong and dont us much of anything else anymore. We sprayed all of the pool chairs and part of the fence. Everyone has been amazed at how well its worked. We''ve even stopped and sprayed a chair for someone when they bring their own and they will go from being swarmed to not noticeable with about 4 good sprays on the chair. We''ve had a lot of rain and done minimal respraying so I can''t fully say if it lasts forever on non-washed items but it''s lasted well enough that I think this larger bottle will last us well over a year. Since I paid full price for this if you find this review helpful click yes/helpful so others will see it as well.

Love Sawyers! After spending a day clearing part of a thicket, I had 30 small seed ticks attached to my skin. They crawled up my legs, under my shirt and attached themselves to my skin. Frustrated, I bought Sawyer spray to try. I applied the spray on a pair of old tan pants and a light weight off white long sleeve shirt. (TIP: I used the clip hanger to hold the pants up and a regular hanger for the shirt. I hung them off a tree branch while applying the spray. This allowed me to walk around and really hit all parts of the clothing).
The next weekend, I got dressed in my Sawyer treated apparel and then tromping through the weeds to get to the thicket. I soon had 16 ticks crawling up my pant leg and only a couple managed to get above my knees. Most of them slowed to a small crawl and stopped or they just fell off the pants. I was impressed, very impressed!! I pulled a couple off my pants and held them in my hand, breathing on them trying to get them to move towards the CO2, but they didn''t move - they were dead. Confident that I wasn''t going to have any issues, I spent 6 hours on a hot summer day recapturing the land from the thicket. Happy to report that when I got home, there were no ticks on my clothing or attached to my body. Which made my wife extremely happy ... which leads me to my "100% honest - Highly recommend" review.
****I was NOT paid or provided the product in exchange for the review. I bought the repellent with my own hard earned money and this review is based off my personal experience using the product.****

I have been using this on my hiking clothes for a year now. I combine this with deet on my skin. I have found no ticks and have only gotten mosquito bites a couple of times. I think those times may have been the result of uneven application. It is difficult to get an even application with the pump. Typically some areas are soaked while others are just lightly misted. I tend to err n the side of caution and use more in those spots. As a result I use alot more products per outfit than the literature touts. The problems with the pump are magnified when the it has been previously used. It seems to be a bit clogged and leaks onto the hand more. The thing that bothers me the most is the warnings concerning use of this product around cats should be more prominent. Fresh wet permetherin will seriously harm your cat. 40% of cats exposed to it die or must be euthanized. Once dried it is fine to wear your treated clothes around your cat. But even a small amount of wet permetherin can kill your cat. Many of the poisoning cases have occurred from the cat touching the bedding of a recently treated dog. I suggest applying it outside of the house, in a storage locker perhaps and then sending several hours out of the house away from the cat. Go shopping, catch a movie, whatever. This doesn''t mean that if it rains on your hiking clothes you can''t go home. It is only when the permetherin is in its initial liquid state that this is a problem. I do think it is negligent that these warnings are not more prominent. In my opinion every customer should be made aware of this pre-sale. Having said that I will not go hiking without it. I have no hesitations about going off trail in pursuit of the perfect photo.

I just came back from a nine-day trip deep into the Peruvian jungle -- into the reserve part of Manu National Park. It was an incredible journey! Fantastic nature, and incredibly isolated and pristine (an area never disturbed, and still inhabited by non-contacted peoples). But ahead of time I was extremely nervous about mosquito bites, because twice in the last ten years or so I have been to the emergency clinic with dozens of bug bites and a very strong allergic reaction to them. I practically obsessed over what to do to prevent mosquito bites as much as possible, because I have had such a strong reaction to bug bites, and the jungle is certainly full of mosquitos and other biting insects!.
I am very happy to say that everything that I did worked -- I got very few bites, and I didn''t even notice them until I searched for them. Everyone else in our group got plenty of bites, and they were itching like crazy, but not me!!!
Here is what I did and what I brought:
1. I have a Peruvian friend who is a doctor. He told me to take Vitamin B complex every day for a week before the trip and every day in the jungle. I used these:
Nature Made Super B Complex Tablets, Value Size, 360 Count
2. I bought two bottles of this Permethrin spray and very carefully sprayed ALL of my clothing, carefully following the directions on the bottle. I sprayed all of my clothing at home in my garage, and then packed it all in these giant ziploc bags:
Ziploc Big Bag Double Zipper, Large, 5-Count
(by the way, those bags were great for packing everything and really helped to keep things from getting too damp in the 100% humidity jungle!). I sprayed the three pairs of hiking pants I brought, three long-sleeved shirts, all of my thick hiking socks, and my sunhat (both sides). I put extra spray at all openings - pant cuffs, shirt cuffs, and shirt button seams. While there I always tucked my pants legs into my socks. The tour company had suggested wearing a cotton t-short under long-sleeved shirts because the mosquitoes bite through clothing, but I never did that; I didn''t need to as I just didn''t get bites through the Permethrin-sprayed clothing. This stuff really worked, as I did not get bites through my Permethrin-treated clothing!
3. I took the antihistamine Loratidine (generic for Claritin, this one:
GoodSense Allergy Relief Loratadine Tablets, 10 mg, 30 Count Bottle
) as a prophylactic every morning, to prevent my strong reaction to bites. This worked GREAT -- I did get a few bites, as I could see the tiny red dots, but I didn''t feel anything at all from them! I took only enough for the days that I was in the jungle. In the two days in Cusco before returning to the US I started itching a little on a couple of bites. In hindsight I should have taken a few extra tablets to take in the next few days after the trip. (Another hint - some people get drowsy on this stuff; I tested it first at home before going on my trip. There are other OTC non-drowsy antihistamines you can try if this doesn''t work, like the generic for Zyrtec.)
4. I bought DEET. In my paranoia about insect bites and my prior reaction to them, I bought several different versions of DEET -- spray, wipes, and lotion, but I used only this spray, and only three times:
Repel 94101 6-Ounce Sportsmen Max Insect Repellent 40-Percent DEET Pump Spray, Case Pack of 1
. That bottle is plenty for lots of people; to minimize weight and volume in your pack you might even want to put it into a smaller travel-sized spray bottle. I sprayed the backs of my hands, and then wiped from the backs of my hands onto my neck, cheeks, and forehead.
5. I had a mosquito head net that I purchased many years ago. Amazon has others but not the one that I have, so I can''t give a link. I used this only two or three times when the mosquitos were especially thick. I had sprayed this also with Permethrin before leaving home.
6. I also brought with me an over the counter anti-itch creme (hydrocortisone), and a prescription-strength anti-itch creme (Clobetisol). I never used either one!!!!! But my travelling partners sure were happy that I had it so they could use it! I also had Sting Eze (
StingEze Max2 Insect Bite Itch Relief Dauber, 0.5-Ounce
), but this too I never needed, and my travelling friends were very happy to use.
I worried a LOT before the trip about getting mosquito bites and my reaction to them. Really worried. I questioned my sanity for going! But with this Permethrin spray and everything else I did to prep, I had NO problems with mosquitos and I was able to totally enjoy the trip!!!!

Nearly two years ago, I got Lyme disease. It took such a long time to diagnose, I was left with permanent damage. I wouldn''t wish this experience on anyone. When I realized what was causing all my misery, I got very scared about my sons or my husband getting bitten by ticks. They camp often and hike in the mountains near us. They are outside most days, and knowing that I was bitten by a tick in that same area, I started researching the best insect sprays I could find. I came across this and bought it based on the reviews. I make sure my sons ALWAYS have this sprayed on the legs of their jeans when they go into the mountains, and it''s been sprayed on their tent, too. The spray is nice, much nicer than the aerosol ones that spray all over and half of it is blown away by the breeze. This stuff sticks to the clothes and stays there. It doesn''t stain, doesn''t smell, and the most important part is that it works. I haven''t seen a single tick (or any bug) on them since they''ve been using this spray. I still make sure they check themselves over each night for ticks, but this gives me peace of mind. Believe me when I say, Lyme is a nasty, horrible disease to have, and you don''t want it! This seems to be the best defense I can find to prevent ticks and still let my kids enjoy the outdoors.

I don''t like chemicals. My garden is completely organic and I plant plants that attract bees and butterflies. I love nature. That''s why I started a Ladies Hike Club. We hike every Sunday. It was the hikes that made me buy Premethrin. I was finding 2-3 ticks on my body after every hike. I know enough people with Lyme''s disease that I KNEW I had to do something. So I did my research. It turns out that Permethrin is a very large molecule with zero absorption rate through the skin once it is dry. This product is meant to be sprayed liberally on your clothing, especially your pants, socks and shoes. It doesn''t stain and it dries quickly. Be sure to spray nowhere near cats, bees or butterflies (I sprayed in the middle of my driveway). Although this spray lasts for 3-4 washings, I set my hiking pants aside. I don''t wash them. I hang them up and wear them every time I hike. Oh...and they keep the mosquitoes away too!

It can have been on me for no more than 10 minutes. . The little bugger seemed not to know which way to crawl. It flipped over 2 or 3 times and then fell off. Himm, now that’s what I call anti-tick power.

I expected at least something on my shirt since it wasn''t treated even though my backpack was, nada...not one freaking creepy tick. I am so beyond impressed with this stuff.
