Many of the concepts written about, that are primary to understanding the teachings within the book, are not even listed in the index. The book structure and outline are not well completed either. Some sections should be taught before other chapters to ensure that each chapter makes sense- this was not done. First person is used frequently, making the text seem informal and improperly researched.
Sentence syntax is TERRIBLE. Many of the concepts are described with the word "basically" thrown in, such as, basically, this is how this works.
Poorly written, poorly laid out. Unfortunately, I have to read this book for a class I''m currently taking, otherwise, I''d skip this book entirely.

See more I will start by stating that this is not a book for someone looking for a book on home health solutions or a quick reference guide. This is a book suited more for a classroom or as a business guide.

I selected this book more out of curiosity rather than need. I have been curious about the health care industry beyond just doctor-patient interaction and medicine. Up to this point, I have not really had too much to do with health care beyond visits to the doctor when I get sick, so this book is an opportunity to see another side of health care and it is a very eye-opening read (in a good way) for the uninitiated.

The book covers a lot of ground and most of it is geared towards setting up the best possible experience for the patient. It outlines business-related topics to having a practice, including aspects of operating costs, but not at the expense of sacrificing patient care or cutting corners. The author definitely tries to keep the patient first, which is important in any aspect of health care, but at the same time outlines business strategies and methods that streamline the business of running a health care facility efficiently and cost-effectively.

This is not a book for the casual reader, as I discovered. This is a book suited for someone seriously considering a career in the medical field or someone looking to improve their practice. There’s a lot of information in this book, much of it dealing with business models and methods for making a facility streamlined, but the patient is not forgotten in the process. Suitable for the classroom, this is a good book also for people in the business side of health care.

See more As revealed by the author, this book was intended to be a deep revision of The Quality Handbook for Health Care Organizations: A Manager''s Guide to Tools and Programs . Nonetheless, "too much had changed" and the author began anew (xxi). So, if you are concerned that this text contains recycled material from outdated concepts, no such concerns. This is a complete redo.

This book is for both students and those currently in the field. And, what makes this particularly compelling is the varying perspectives from which this text was written. Yes, this outstanding author has worked in healthcare for decades; however, it was his role as a cancer patient that gave this author another view. So, this work doesn''t merely provide a cold "outsider''s" perspective but offers a compassionate, proactive one as well.

The thorough quality of this text makes it a phenomenal resource for undergraduate classrooms. I really appreciate how the author offers the most meticulous details (down to relevant references to historical figures in the field). I also see how those with this education can easily skim over these areas without this information "bogging down" the text. This is the hallmark of a skilled writer.

For professors: all acronyms and terms are defined and there are suggestions for further readings at the end of each chapter (as well as a list of pertinent websites). Additionally, at the end of each chapter is 1.) a summary, 2.) a list of key terms, and 3.) "quality concepts in action." Everything is neatly compartmentalized and each chapter could easily be distilled into a day''s work. (As a fellow professor, I understand the value of this.)

I want to express what I find most innovative and impressive about this text: it is truly patient-centered. The word "quality" in the title is not a misnomer. Instead, this author has the patient''s best interest at heart. How truly refreshing. And, in the long run, this makes a great deal of sense even from a financial standpoint ... as the author repeatedly points out. What one finds here is the perfect marriage of compassionate care while keeping costs low (and recognizing that healthcare is a money-making industry). This balance is remarkable. And laudable.

Everything about Dlugacz text is perfect for the classroom: it is compassionate, elegant, frank, and pragmatic. That is a rare combination that I feel one would be hard-pressed to find in a comparable text.

Highly, highly recommended.

I felt like a lot of this book went right over my head, obviously; however, I understood this book makes a consistent case for demonstrating humanity in health care. It could just be because that was what I was looking for.

In today''s regulation laden, data driven world, documentation as well as financial accountability are required. This book provides a broad but thorough introduction to the methodology. I was impressed by the organization, especially the resource section including helpful websites at the end of each chapter. Like most texts it is fairly dry reading but essential for students and health care professionals alike. Helpful Report
