At first I thought I might send this book back; there is really not a lot of new material here and if you have a collection of this type of book, as I do, you will see many familiar techniques. It is, admittedly, called "fundamentals" and that is exactly what it is. Its STRENGTHS, however, are its organization (it is all sectioned out in artistic genres), its conciseness (all the directions are straight forward and brief), clear photos that show JUST the technique being taught and the hardback spiral binding for laying the book out on a table. As an artist and a teacher of art workshops, this is an excellent book to go to when looking to try something new but not complicated or create a good lesson quickly and easily.

When I read the reviews on this book and looked inside I was interested. When I received the book, now that''s another story. When looking through the book online, I noticed that it helps you with background techniques for painting.Which is the reason for buying it in the first place. But once I had the book and looked through it, I noticed the book just skims through the surface of techniques and there wasn''t any steps by step guidelines either. Just a brief explanation on what to do or how to do. I found only about three images showing the after effect of each technique the book spoke of. I felt confused because I wasn''t sure it I was doing the techniques right. So, I''ll go on YouTube and see if I find a video on the techniques mentioned in the book.
I''m giving this book a 4 star only because there are really interesting things in it. But it lacks a step by step guideline for the reader to understand entirely.

I love all the ideas in this book, but it''s not for complete beginners as it doesn''t provide as much description as it would if it were for beginners. Since I was mostly aware of the supplies used, it worked out okay, but the things that I wasn''t aware of, I had to go research online. But at least I had this book to provide beautiful example photos and to inform me of the techniques and supplies so I could look online for them. For the price, it was good.

I say this because It might help in making a decision based on my comments, which are that this is a basic book of techniques and best suited to a beginner. The fact that it is spiral bound is useful if you want to work from it and have it open, and the there are lots of images to help. However it does not have much in the way of examples to show how the techniques are used, which is what I was expecting. This is a small book in size (about A5) but could have been made more complete if they had made it an A4 size and included finished artworks with instructions throughout. Best suited to those who have little or no knowledge of mixed media.43 people found this helpfulReportMandyfab4.0 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseAn inspiration for those frightened to experiment with new materials and techniques.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2018
