This pyrography pen comes with 10 assorted replaceable pen tips, and you can easily adjust the temperature by turning the temperature control knob.

Tips and Cautions

Avoid applying excessive pressure on the pen tip, and let the tip's heat do its work.

Try different temperature settings with different pen tips on scrap wood, figuring out how to create your desired strokes.

How to control the intensitiy and thickness of the burn marks?

1. Adjust pyrography pen's temperature. (The higher, the darker, the lower, the lighter)

2. Slow down or speed up pyrography pen movement.

3. Try light-colored strokes before burning the same area repeatedly to darken the shade.

My kids and I are learning to use these. I got three different ones - partly to compare them and partly because we just needed more than one at a time for everyone to create together. Two happened to be identical (with a little... See more My kids and I are learning to use these. I got three different ones - partly to compare them and partly because we just needed more than one at a time for everyone to create together. Two happened to be identical (with a little knob but no light). Both were in the $33-36 range. This one is $10 cheaper and I dare say, slightly better for four main reasons:

1 - It doesn''t feel cheap - the other ones have a temperature control knob that wobbles a little, and one of the stand broke before we even used it once. This feels heftier but not heavy.

2 - The other ones don''t keep as constant of a temperature. If I draw a line slowly, at the same speed, going with the grain, it gets thinner as I go because the tip is cooling off against the wood. With this one, the lines are more consistent and we don''t get burn spots as easily while drawing a line. Going with the grain, it goes through like butter. Going against the grain takes a lot more patience and practice.

3 - The way this handle is shaped, it "hugs" the stand so it doesn''t slip off nearly as easily.

4 - the set comes with a pair of pliers - real metal, decent quality pliers. These are perfect for changing the tip mid-work!! The other sets don''t come with anything so if you want to change your tip, you have to either wait till it cools down first, get a pair of pliers yourself or try to carefully do with with the gloves (but the gloves melt).

One other thing to note. The red "indicator" light doesn''t really do much. It turns red when you have it on. But it doesn''t blink or turn green when the temperature is ready. There''s nothing in the directions to tell me that it would, but there''s also nothing to tell me what it''s suppose to do. It is pretty easy to tell when the pen is ready though, you can both smell and feel the radiating heat. The red light is handy for reminding you that it''s plugged in and turned on.

Overall, this is a fun toy to learn with. My kids (ages 9 & 11) are enjoying it with me and my 7 year old even joins in at times, but its really too hard for him to hold right now. See more The maker of this kit has tried to include everything you would need to get started in pyrography (wood burning). The kit includes an electric heating tool, a number of different tips for it in a plastic box, a small wire stand, stencils, colored pencils, carbon paper, a #2 pencil and sharpener, needle nose pliers, and several shapes of wood cutouts, all in a zippered case. The heating tool has an on/off switch, a light to indicate when it is on, a temperature adjustment knob, and a "hand guard" to keep your hand from getting too close to the end. The tips screw on and off. I found that wood burning worked best set at the maximum temperature. The kit states that it can also be used for stencil cutting, hot stamping, and hot knife cutting.

The stand for the heating tool is basically just a piece of wire and a sponge. However, when I laid the tool down without the stand the tip did not touch my work surface, so the stand did not seem necessary. I had purchased a silicon mat to cover my work surface and I would recommend that as a supplement to the kit.

I also recommend that you pay attention to how the items are stored in the case when you first open it. I did not, and I may never be able to fit them all in again.

This kit could be improved by adding better instructions and an explanation of what the different tips can be used for. Also, the temperature adjustment knob on the tool is very small and, other than showing a "red zone," really gives you no information. But this is a well-thought-out and useful kit, so I am rating it 5 stars.
