Description
Hedge your bets against the weather with a UCO Stormproof Match Kit. Stormproof Matches are windproof, waterproof, light up quickly and consistently in driving rain, heavy winds, and falling snow with a burn time of up to 15 seconds—plus they will relight after being submerged in water. Each kit includes 25 Stormproof Matches, 3 strikers, and a cotton ball inside a waterproof case that floats. The waterproof, durable ABS plastic case can hold up to 40 Stormproof Matches (alternate the match tips with some facing up and some facing down) for longer trips for when you need the added security to build a fire. Being able to reliably make a fire is vital for cooking, generating warmth, and in survival situations, making signal fires. UCO Stormproof Matches are perfect for camping, emergency kits, and should be part of every 10 Essentials check list. If a match becomes wet, just wipe dry before use. If a striker becomes wet, the striker will not work, but needs to dry first so that the surface is once again firm, so use a spare striker (2 spares included) until then. Matches and strikers will last for many years as long as they remain dry and protected from the elements inside the waterproof case or inside a sealed plastic bag. Easily refill your Stormproof Match Kit with UCO Stormproof Matches sold in single (25 matches) or twin-packs (50 matches). Length of match: 2.75 inches (7 cm); Kit Weight: 1.7 oz. (48 g). Designed in Seattle, Made in India. 1-year manufacturer’s warranty.

I bought these for use in a bug out bag. I was reviewing the contents of my bag, and decided to test a match, stupidly forgetting the “storm proof” part. While idly sitting on my bed, I lit a match and then desperately tried to blow or shake it out before it burned my fingers.
The panic wasn’t necessary though - when the red part was burned through the flame calmed down immediately, and that came long before my fingers. But I am impressed (though in the moment, intensely concerned) that even soaking the flame in the sink wasn’t enough to stop the fire before it got through the red part. Even after it was held directly in the stream of water, it immediately sparked back up again as soon as it was removed.
All the qualities that make it inconvenient for lighting in a bedroom make for a great match in a damp camping or emergency setting. Thank you for the great matches. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to air out my studio, it smells like smoke and flame accelerant.

Finished up a 5 day trip, 3 of which were in pouring rain, day and night. Lighting a fire was tough, even with the matchea, due to soaked tinder. Something to keep in mind is that while they''re great, they still won''t save wet tinder. I ended up needing to feather stick AND Vaseline soaking a cotton ball to finally get a good flame. Matches didn''t let me down, though the striking surface wears out very quickly. After 10 lights, I had to replace it, though I wonder if the wet contributed to its quick wear.
Still, I recommend these. Without them, my fire wouldn''t have gotten going.

The matches work... but are not something I would count on in an emergency. I might use them as a last resort.
First, the wooden stick is ridiculously skinny and weak. It WILL break when you strike it. On the FIRST try. And I''m the guy who never breaks the wooden stick on traditional wooden matches, so I know that these are flimsy. Second, they only burn for about 7 to 9 seconds. Nowhere near 15 seconds. And because you no longer have a stick to hold, you have to fumble to get the match where you want it, or it will burn your fingers.
It comes with a striker installed - it should be removed and stored inside the container. You can strike these on any striker material, including old-school matchbooks, kitchen match boxes, etc.
There is a small wad of cotton tinder included, it also serves as padding to keep the matches from rattling around.
The container is cheap Chinese plastic, and you might get a good one, or you might get a bad one. I got two bad ones. The o-rings are garbage. Neither of the two I ordered was waterproof until I machined the plastic lip and replaced the o-rings, which was a total hassle. Had I know this ahead of time, I would have simply bought the refills and used my own container.
Also, totally overpriced, you can buy these at wallymart for 5 bucks.
Bottom line: A box of kitchen matches is cheaper, and would probably be more likely to save your life than these overpriced foreign made matches.
On Edit: So if these aren''t that great, what is? My suggestion is the Zippo Typhoon, they are waaaaay better.

This is a very good product. Plastic container is sturdy and very visible. Comes with extra strips for striking your matches and a bit of cotton to help keep the moisture level in check could also probably be used as tinder. My only real complaint is that a couple match stick''s protective coating stuck to the cotton ruining the wax seal. Not a big deal at all in my case but I worry some containers may have more matches that have been unsealed. I would definitely recommend closely inspecting the matches if you are planning on keeping these for emergency purposes. That aside, this is an excellent product and I will be purchasing more in the near future.
(I''ve included an image of the two damaged matches with a good match for reference.) You could probably reseal the top with some candle wax for an easy waterproof fix.

I just wanted to note a mistake I made, in case others do the same...other zombified, tired, survival gear hunters :o)
I''ve done so much researching for my kits that I''ve seen this product from many sellers on many sites. Some had this product with a mirror on the inside of the cap. I saw it so much that when I ordered it here, I expected the mirror. Apparently not all sellers have the mirror version. Now that I have the product it in front of me though I can see just how tiny that mirror would''ve been, I am not missing it.
My mistake aside, this was worth every penny. The container alone was worth what I paid. If you are making really small kits, check the measurements. It may be a little bulky. You could easily take some of the matches out, grab the extra strikers and put them in a small resealable bag.Or take some out and use the space inside the tube to store other things. You could reuse the container for something else entirely. I certainly wouldn''t throw it away. It has a thick rubber seal and when I ran it under a pressured water from the faucet and pushed it down into a plugged sink it didn''t fail. The matches are big and well coated. Much better than those which only have the orange material. There was no crumbling or broken pieces. Inside of the cap you get some cotton and the extra strikers are in a little bag inside the tube.
I''m going to order a backup...in another color.

I lit one in the kitchen to test how easily they started. Turns out it was pretty fast. So I tried to blow it out. Then I tried again. Then I tried again. Panicked, I ran to the sink and tossed it in the dish water. It bubbled for several seconds meaning it was still attempting to burn while submerged. Holy crap! I''m assuming since they could withstand 3 sturdy blows and submerging in dish water, they''ll probably work when you''re trying to light them in your moms basement under the leaky pipes while testing your tacticool survival gear.

I live in Houston where we are prone to tropical storms, hurricanes, floods and power outages. Based on the recommendations, I bought the UCO Stormproof Match Kit "just in case," but I''m not sure they are worth it.
First, they are smoky as heck. If you ignite one in an enclosed space you are going to need to air it out pronto. Second, no way do these burn 15 seconds; they burn 7-10 seconds, tops. Finally, the striker is exposed to the elements and will likely get wet.
I do like the bright orange waterproof case with extra strikers inside. And the match does indeed reignite after being submerged. But I think a cheap disposable butane lighter or the hefty Zippo Typhoon Match Kit with protected striker might be better emergency options for most folks,
So, four stars.

These matches work as advertised. The tip appears to have extra-long-lasting magnesium flare, so you have to take that into account--you can''t hold the match long enough to use it in more than one area, so it might be helpful to have a candle handy--just in case. It comes wrapped in plastic and with extra sheets of striker material. This is all great for a survival situation, but only if it is short-term. There are about 25 matches, so over an extended survival period you might well run out, unless you can keep a fire going. That and the difficulty of handling the extra-long flare of the match are why I took off a star. The extra-long flare, however, may be a life-saver in windy conditions, as the match is not going to blow out.
