It's a universal truth that is readily apparent in our daily lives, but one that is too often overlooked at play. From the essential, life-preserving warmth that we've provided to some of the world's most significant expeditions, to a simple seat that turns a rocky outcrop into the most amazing lunch stop you've ever dreamed of, the right dose of comfort makes everything better by allowing you to be at your best.

Description

The Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XLite Ultralight Inflatable Air Mattress for three-season backpacking, mountaineering, and camping is the ultimate minimalist’s expedition sleeping pad. Offering maximum warmth for the weight, it''s designed specifically for adding a padded layer of warmth and insulation between sleeping bag and ground in alpine conditions. Baffled internal structure provides support and comfort in a 2.5-inch inflated mattress, for a restful night in the backcountry. The Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XLite sleeping pad is perfect for lightweight expeditions thanks to its innovative tapered design and materials, which eliminate bulk, making it possible to pack the ground pad to the size of a one-liter water bottle. Available in two styles: Equipped with the Standard Valve, or equipped with the WingLock Valve which is able to inflate a pad three times faster than a standard valve thanks to a larger barrel and optional one-way inflation. Standard Valve models include stuff sack and repair kit for fixing punctures, and WingLock Valve models include a pump sack (for easier, breath-free pad inflation), a stuff sack and a repair kit. Made in the USA. Manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

I''m a committed hammock backpacker, but recently I went on a trip that had no place for hammocks to hang. Desperate, I turned to the advice of a friend completing a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. He is using the Them-a-rest NeoAir XLite, and absolutely loves it. He said it was comfortable for his large frame (and weight), hardly crinkled, and easy to pack and carry. Well, I wasn''t doing a thru hike, but a good night''s sleep is just as important on any trip, so I bought this rest-pad. I haven''t tent camped in years, so I expected a restless night of tossing and turning. I was shocked that I fell to sleep almost immediately - no tossing and turning and I had NO pressure points irritated during my sleep. I stayed warm and very comfortable. As for the crinkling ? None. I mean you are going to hear the sound of your clothes or sleeping bag glide across the pad''s surface as with any fabric, but I did not hear the cringing crinkling noise I typically hear from my tent-camping buddies. I asked my friends the next morning if they heard me and each said "no" they never heard me move during the night. Some things to be aware of though - as with any air filled pad, your heaviest part of your body will slightly displace air to other parts of the pad - you will likely want some blanket or towel to help offset that "lift" you may experience. For example, my hips and thighs are muscular but my waist and shoulders are slim, so the shifted air lifts the lighter portions and thus my raised shoulders meant my head was lifted, too, which meant my neck was at an odd angle as the weight of my head pulled it back down. Since don''t camp with a pillow - I rolled my extra clothes into a makeshift pillow to support my head and neck. This is not a design flaw in the pad - just a user-friendly piece of advice to maximize your positive experience when using the pad. I have to say I really slept with almost the same amount of comfort on this pad as my hammock. I only say "almost" because I am a zealot when it comes to hammocks! If you have avoided camping because of the lack of comfort when sleeping on the ground, this rest pad is for you! 75 people found this helpful Helpful Report Rachel B.1.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Buyer beware. See more Terribly disappointed in this product and company. We purchased 2 of these for camping. One works fine. The other will not stay inflated. Past the 30 day return on Amazon, so contacted ThermaRest. They told us we had to find the leak (we couldn’t find one) and pay to mail it to them. Then, if they find a leak, they’ll fix it and return it to us. If I pay over $200 for a camping pad, I expect it to work or for the company to replace it. Very disappointed.
Update: After speaking with Amazon and returning our product, we are out $45 for a mat that never held air. Highly disappointed in the customer service by both TheramRest and Amazon.

See more This is a preferred choice of hiking mattresses when every ounce is counted and Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite delivers where matters: it''s easy to inflate (no silly inflation bags are needed), it''s warm to sustain you to about 20F and you can always flip it around in hot weather to stay cooler and it is surprisingly comfy even though it''s not very thick and side sleepers need to approach with caution.
I have few complaints about Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite. It is very crinkly and loud, compared to most competing pads and it does not come in Regular Wide size for those who don''t need extra length but appreciate some space for their hands when laying on your back or stomach. It''s also quite slippery and the side rails are not raised like in many other pads, so you are running the risk of sliding from this pad in the middle of the night.
However, if you count every ounce, these pads are the lightest insulated pads on the market that still deliver comfortable uncompromising sleep while on the trail.
If you are OK sacrificing couple of extra ounces though, Big Agnes Q core SLX comes highly recommended as it is much thicker, has raised side rails, very quiet to sleep on and is even warmer then Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite while still staying very light on the scales. And yes, Big Agnes does come in regular wide size. Word of caution though, it takes twice as long to inflate Big Agnes compared to Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite and so (optional and quite pricy) inflatable bag may be necessary.

See more This went with me on a 6 night trip where it dipped down to low 30s overnight and I was perfectly comfortable the entire time. II''m 5''6" so I just put my backpack down by my feet to keep them off the ground and that worked perfectly. I used a stuff sack pump every night and the pad always had enough pressure to be comfortable. At 8oz and rolling up pretty small if you want to go ultralight this is a fantastic choice.
One of the most common complaints I hear and read about inflatable pads is the old cold butt syndrome where someone goes to sleep with the pad just fine but they wake in the morning because they think it deflated overnight. Usually this happens in colder conditions and usually it never deflated at all. The problem is pretty simple although can get complex. Using the formula (pressureA x volumeA)/temperatureA = (pressureB x volumeB)/temperatureB with pressure being constant since your body weight creates the bulk of the pressure you can predict the volume of air in the pad at varying temperatures. If you blow into it with your body temperature air and assuming it cools a little as you blow in and accounting for the cooling of the air in the pad due to conduction with the ground you can determine volume. Let''s say the air in the pad is down to 70F when you lay down but it gets down to 50F at the coldest time the volume will decrease by almost 30%. To avoid the cold butt you have to blow the coolest air into it as you can (via a pump or stuff sack pump), blow more into it when you think it''s full (increasing the initial pressure value), or blow it up when you set up camp then blow more into it just before bed time.
Happy hiking to you!

See more I''ve used 2 previous generations of Thermarests - the old self-inflating foam core type, and the newer closed cell green on one side, silver on the other "waffle" surface pad so many people use. But this NeoAir X-Lite gave me the best night of sleep by far. I sleep on my side, and the 2.5 inches of cushioning make all the difference. FYI, I initially got the Women''s version to save a few ounces, thinking my feet would be ok hanging off the end. (I''m 5''11".) Not so. So I gave that one away as a gift and got the full sized regular. It does make more noise than the other types, but the increased comfort makes that a trivial complaint. More comfort means less tossing and turning. 67 people found this helpful Helpful Report Laurinka11113.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Great sleeping pad but TOO NARROW - doesn''t work for me Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2019 I started getting more and more into backpacking and I finally wanted to splurge on a well-made and durable sleeping pad. See more I started getting more and more into backpacking and I finally wanted to splurge on a well-made and durable sleeping pad. I read many reviews, and after much deliberation, I decided to buy Thermarest NeoAir XLite. It was on sale on Amazon so I ordered it.
Immediately after opening the box I was shocked how long and narrow this pad is (as compared to my previous Klymit V2 sleeping pad). I went online and saw that Thermarest NeoAir XLite is listed as 20 inches wide while my Klymit pad was 25inches. That''s a whole 5 inches narrower and I knew immediately I might have issues with that. (I sold the V2 because it wasn''t offering enough support for me as a side sleeper as it wasn''t warm enough.) On the contrary, NeoAir XLite is super comfortable!
My issue is that it takes quite a few breaths to inflate but I learned quickly that you don''t need to inflate it more than halfway as your weight will distribute evenly. Too full will make the pad too hard and uncomfortable.
But the main reason why I''m not in love with this mat is that IT IS NOT for side sleepers or people who toss a lot through the night. Because it is so narrow, I would find myself sliding off the pad. I tried sleeping with my sleeping pad inside of my sleeping bag, sleeping with the bag open (to avoid the materials sliding) and still, I would fall off. Just to be clear, I am a stomach/side sleeper with one leg slightly raised, which makes my body width well beyond this mat and I would sleep with half of my leg off the mat if I wanted to position myself comfortably, and hence, touch the ground through the night. It wasn''t much of an issue in summer, but I know I would be freezing in colder conditions. Because the mat is so narrow, it doesn''t work for me. I wish it was 3-5 inches wider.
NeoAir XLite gets a lot of positive reviews, but they must be mostly from people who are back sleepers. If you sleep in any other position, you should try the pad in a store like REI where you can inflate it and see it for yourself.
I''m sad that it doesn''t work for me as I got it on a super sale for under $120 and it feels comfortable. Doesn''t matter how much I try, I can''t sleep on my back or flat on stomach all night long.
I tried it for approx. 10 nights and it just won''t work for me in the long run.
