The Citadel: Mirror World Series, Book 2J.5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Power Gaming with a Level Zero Grinder Account! Notably, "Legendary Moonlight Sculptor" and "Way of the Shaman" have main characters with crafting professions. However, the main characters in these aforementioned books spend a great deal of their time in combat! Another book, "Only Sense Online" delves more into crafting, yet highlights a casual player who doesn''t progress very rapidly in the gaming sense.

The Citadel changes all that! It continues from Mirror World Book1 with a main character forced into a crafting profession by the system. He can raise his skills ridiculously high and can''t die, but he is stuck at level zero and cannot participate in combat at all.

Yet the main character in the Citadel is a powerful force. Although he barely crafts and hardly grinds in this book, he finds himself enmeshed in major events in the game world. Normally, the major events and resources he uncovers would be found via combat, usually with a large raid group. Yet his restrictions force him to find creative ways to gain these things with only his level zero character. This keeps the book interesting as he progresses incredibly fast in the gaming sense (no casual player here!), yet he does it without gaining in levels or outer power (still a level zero).

All in all, I really enjoyed this high quality and well-translated LitRPG. Can''t wait for more!

The main character is intelligent but not omniscient so he does make mistakes but never the same one twice.
It''s great not having to read about some emotionally unstable naive character because the author has a shallow understanding of people.

Other characters are clearly multidimensional as well. There are no true allies and no true villains. Everyone is trying to make money in one way or another and has varying levels of greed. There are no free handouts that aren''t explained properly down the line.

The plot progression is great from book to book. There are cliffhangers but the main problems that are introduced each book are resolved in said book. I especially enjoyed the MC''s decision at the end of book 2 when he decides not to recklessly jump for a good offer without thinking it through properly and in return another door opens.

Typos and grammatical mistakes are minimal.

For those worried about the story being forever about mining with a low level account(myself included). It will be different after book 2.
I am definitely looking forward to the next book as Olgerd will finally get to explore the parts of the game he has been restricted to.

See more The book starts where book 1 ended: in town with Oleg on his way to Maragar Citadel. It quickly becomes clear he knows very little about the game despite having been inside for some time, but through luck, perseverance and friendly gamers he manages to garner some more perks. What is more, some of the questions from book 1 are answered. At the end of the book Oleg is ready for the next big step.

I had hesitated to buy book 2 due to my misgivings about book 1, but I have no regrets having finally caved in and reading it. For one thing, there was more tension and my major misgivings where actually resolved by the end of book 2. Going into the details though would be a major spoiler.

One thing that keeps surprising me in the Russian litRPG is how prevelent PvP is and how much it costs the character when killed by a player. I am not a big expert when it comes to on-line gaming in RL, but the ones I did play never allowed PvP to such an extent, nor would any character loose any equipment on death (beyond the need to spend gold to repair it). Granted, the PvP/thievery/threachery makes good story, but crappy gaming. Then again, few litRPGs look at why people play games and why some elements of the story would never work with games in RL.

Anyway, a good read, better than part 1 and leaving me real curious about part 3.

See more An excellent continuation of a very interesting series, this book is a bit more predictable then the first. Despite this, it''s a pleasure to read! The main character''s view of a full-immersion virtual reality from a "this is just a job" perspective continues to be a key theme and it''s interesting to see that him start to lose that perspective at times (a month''s worth of immersion anywhere is going to do that).
The book does end with a rather predictable set of changes which will be a challenge for book 3 to handle in a way that helps the series continue to stand out amongst others in this genre, but these first two books are good enough that it almost doesn''t matter -- you should read them regardless as to how the third book turns out!

It''s nice that we now see the reason for him getting such benefits and in game relics. With this information, it looks as if book 3 will be interesting, and I wonder how he will progress as he has 2 more masters to visit, and what skills benefits he will get from that.

I''ve pre-ordered book 3, but in the meantime, I also got the audio version of this one. The narrator doesn''t sound (to me) to be a great fit for the main character''s personality, but he reads very well.
