I''ve used this cookbook for years, had to get a new copy when mine wore out, and just bought two more copies for my adult children. This book is written by a German, about real German food, cooked the way they do there, and it''s not pretentious. The recipes are simple and excellent. German cuisine is not fancy, but they know how to cook and make things taste good (unlike the English). You want things more fancy and fussy, go to France. This is mostly comfort food, and with my genetic German heritage on both sides of my family, I can feel my body saying, "well, you finally got something right." There are charming little stories with many of the recipes, the illustrations show the German countryside and settings, and the author stipulates with almost every meat recipe that it should be served with beer. Preferably several. That''s how you know it''s genuine German. Spend $7 and you may pass this cookbook down to your kids.

I bought this because it said "illustrated" in the description. Unfortunately, the illustrations were of the German country side not of the recipes I was trying to make. Very disappointing.

I truly enjoyed this cookbook. I am from a German heritage and it is so difficult to find cookbooks with authentic recipes; this one is a wonderful example.
