Product Description
BTECH UV-50X2 X-Series Mobile - 50 Watt Dual Band Radio
The X-Series Mobiles introduce our new fully customizable Multi-Color LCD display screen. You can adjust the complete display to be exactly as you want it. Beyond the display, you can fully customize your channels to display their alpha-numeric names or frequency settings.
There are 200 programmable memory channels. You can add or remove channels from scanning list. You can give channels alphanumeric names. You can easily program from a PC to set-up the radio to operate exactly as needed. Pair the UV-50X2 with the Nagoya UT-72 Magnetic Mount Antenna for easy installation with the UHF antenna connectors. The PC04 FTDI Cable is recommended for easier computer programming
The UV-50X2 operates as multiple radios in one, with either 144 MHz or 430 MHz as the 'Main' TX/RX band, while simultaneously watching up to 3 other frequencies or channels; and, if you like, you can configure your UV-50X2 for simultaneous VHF-VHF or UHF-UHF operation, too!
🇺🇸 BTECH Radios are Designed in the USA 🇺🇸
BTECH Radios are not like other similar looking radios. BTECH radios are designed in the USA with custom firmware and internal hardware differences. BTECH radios are backed with a full US warranty and support. A BTECH label means you are getting the best radio available! A few of our differences are below:
BTECH radios use an upgraded Power Chipset (other radios use a smaller incorrectly sized final that will burn out over time)
Dual Synchronize Display Mode: Synchronize Up to 2 Channels - and display both their channel name and channel frequency!
Microphone Audio Gain Settings: Sound great and customize your microphone output for any repeater
Expanded Frequency Range (up to 520MHz)
Auto Power Off Function: Save your battery and prevent unnecessary power draining
Channel Mode Editing Settings: Edit saved memory channels on-the-fly; our firmware does not require you to delete a channel to make changes
New Scanning Modes: Auto Scan (Scan with a power reboot), Scanning Resume, and Variable Frequency Scanning
Quad Watch Delay Time: Allows the receiver to stay on the secondary channel longer after incoming transmission - customize the delay up to 50 seconds; This avoids manually channel switching when you are engaged with simultaneous contacts on two frequencies
Randomization Privacy Mode
Dual Simultaneous Display
The X-Series Mobiles also introduces our new dual sync mode! With this option, you can single or dual sync two different channels and display both their frequency and name simultaneously. If you prefer instead to monitor up to four channels; you can single line display a channel's name or frequency. Additionally, as a new feature added: you can even monitor both VFO (frequency) and channel modes simultaneously.
Edit channels on-the-fly
Another feature introduced in the X-Series mobiles is the ability to edit your channel preferences without needing to program a new channel! You can edit tones, additional squelch information, and even add or remove it from your scanning list anytime!
Group Tones supported
The UV-50X2 supports the most common Analog Tones. It supports CTCSS, DCS, 2Tone, 5Tone, and DTMF calling methods. Set-up your calling methods to call by group tones. Tone calling (private line) is required by most repeater applications and the UV-50X2 supports the latest standards.
The UV-50X2 can even send DTMF tones. This allows for sending ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones; or it can receive incoming DTMF tones to allow for remote stun or kill commands
New Scanning Modes
A new menu allows you to select scanning resume methods. You can set the radio to start scanning immediately during reboot, resume scanning if you interrupt scanning to transmit, or start scanning soon as it powers on. The UV-50X2 will save your scanning preferences even with a power interruption. Frequency scanning has gotten a full overhaul; you can edit and scan through frequencies exactly as you prefer. Set your frequency range and frequency interval (step) right through the UV-50X2 on-screen interface.

This radio is very sensitive to SWR of the antenna system. You must have an SWR < 1.5:1 if you expect it to last.
Three times I have had this radio blow up in smoke because of a transient variation in the SWR. Even though I had quality cables, carefully protected outside cable connectors, and a qualtiy antenna tuned to SWR of 1.04:1, any momentary slight increase of SWR to a higher value would smoke the transmitter.
The cost of this radio is much less than that of a good VHF/UHF mobile radio. Even with the lesser cost, this radio will eventually make you spend what you should have spent in the first place to avoid problems. I''m giving up and getting a quality radio.
Edit - Addendum
You might want to avoid BTECH Support. They were responsive, and fixed the first two problems. But when I told them of the third, they refused support and literally gave me the finger in an emoticon. You probably would rather have adults helping you.

I bought 2 of these units (BETCH Mobile UV-50X2) to communicate between vehicles on a trip to Alaska - 10,000 miles and three months. This gave them a good test. Generally, they worked well. Both units would occasionally squeal during trans mission and one unit switched frequencies a few times with no user input. While we experienced no problems with the mic cord, its attachment to the radio seems less than robust. The internal speaker is more than adequate. While our vehicles were seldom more that a mile apart, using low power transmission was sufficient. Programming from the mic is very convoluted but with the optional USB programming cable, CHIRP works very well (and easy) to set up memorized frequencies. I highly recommend getting the optional cable to save a lot of frustration.

Update Nov 2 the third radio is underpowered worse than the first. VHF is pushing 32w, UHF only 21watts. Now I have two to send back Documenting all of this here for readers. Also it was off frequency. I would expect a 50w unit to output no less than 45watts VHF and no less than 40 watts UHF keeping in mind that Btech advertises this as "50w(50w)" which to me means 50w on both UHF and VHF
Update Oct 30th Ok on my second one of these now and it was a flop out of the box. It started outputting about 18w then started jumping around and bottoming out at zero watts. At this time the unit started clicking and the screen started flashing... Another unit going back to Amazon. Would like to use the radio... If I can get one to work... I have B-Techs UHF amp and that is working great outputting 37+ watts on a 3.7watt input, rated for 40. Both units were set up with a Btech Nagoya NMO-200C antenna.
Original Review I haven''t had any luck with Btech equipment this year. Two 8HP radios only putting out 6 watts(says uv-6r in the box) one amp only putting out 20watts... New replacement map is good though, cranking out 37 watts when hooked to a UV-5R.
Bought this 50 watt mobile and.... Yea. I got 22 watts on VHF and 32 watts on UHF. If your a math person that''s 56% and 36% under advertised power. There is another brand putting out a similar looking radio, probably the same factory going to give that a try. I probably could get another one of these and get better power but done wasting my time. SWR was excellent though.

Three minor issues keep me from giving this five stars: 1. The display is tiny - only about two inches. It is fairly crisp and clear, but a bigger display that could show more information would be better. 2. The memory preset descriptions are limited to seven characters. Memory is cheap - let us store more text! 3. The buttons on the face of the radio don''t light up. The handset buttons light up very nicely, which is good, but the radio face is dark except for the display itself.

I do like that all the buttons are on the face of the radio so they are easy to see and use. Sound quality is excellent, both sending and receiving. Matched with a good antenna I''m able to broadcast clearly for over 40 miles in simplex. And it''s rugged too. I have it mounted in an old Willys Jeep that shakes and bounces a lot, but the radio continues to work perfectly.

I have two of these radios and have really only used one of them. I found them to be fairly easy to program once I learned how to do it. I am using one of these radios as a base unit and am hitting repeaters 20 to 30 miles away consistently with a homemade antenna hanging in the window of my house. I got the second one to install in my truck, but haven''t got that done yet. These seem to be good radios for the price. The only problem I have with them is the speaker quality is not the greatest, but it''s not that bad. Overall these are good radios for the price.

I bought this unit to replace it''s previous gen model. After installing it, I programmed it with CHIRP like the previous one. Everything seems to work ok except for the display. It will show the welcome message and stay lit up with the channels I have programmed in. After using the radio a few times, the display stays lit up but all the text disappears. I can''t see anything. If I turn off the radio off/on, the display works again.
I did get the radio RMA''d and got my radio back but now the radio is no longer transmitting or receiving. The radio is now out of warranty so I''m pretty much hosed. I''ve had great luck with the BF handhelds and the previous gen UV-5001 radio but not this new model.
I purchased this model when it first got released so maybe the first batch to be produced had manufacturing issues??

I have two of these radios. I have one I use as a base station in my office at home. It sits in an air conditioned room, it''s not subjected to vibrations of going off roading, nor the heat of summer and yet it failed in less than a month. To day out of the blue it decided to turn itself off and back on every time I keyed up the mic to transmit. I tried turning the unit off for a while then turned it back on, It didn''t work. I tried reprogramming the unit. But the problem continued. Now I have another one in my truck works very well so far and it was installed on the same day as the other radio. Its put up with the heat of being mounted to the dashboard of my truck during the summer month. It gets hots (125 f in side the cab), its fan comes on, and it keeps going. I''ve has gone off roading with it, and it didn''t skip a beat. So why the lower rating? One failed within a month of installation, the other reason is the customer service. I filed a claim with Btech, and they responded very quickly ( can''t fault them for that) and accepted my claim with minutes of e-mailing them (once again awesome). They''ll send out a new unit within 24 hours of receiving my unit. Nice. BUT.......... I had to pay to ship it at cost of $23.51 for 3 day ground via UPS from ID to SD, not really going that far. And that''s another reason to be careful, they''ll stick you with shipping for their faulty product. A company with good customer service, that believes in, and stand by their product would have e mailed a return label instead of putting their customer out. Now I''m down to a HT while I wait for a replacement that will take days. I''ve read the reviews, and I''m not the only one that has had this happen to them. So be careful. Yes its a good radio at decent price, but the reliability can be hit or miss, and the customer service is good, but it needs to be better.
